Axegrinder

A mid 80's early crust punk band. The members of the band were involved in the London anarcho punk scene throughout the early 80’s, in various bands. (Stone the Crowz, The Proudhons and Tyrants of Hate). Axegrinder played a grinding crust very reminiscent of Amebix and Antisect. Their Grind the Enemy Demo is much more raw and Antisect sounding. Hit Parade

An anarcho synth punk (or anarcho electro) band of mid 80's from ireland.
Review for bad news ep from
(crass records): This record exposes the tyranny of the British Government's attacks on Northern Ireland. Borrowing from Outta Control:Paper of the Belfast Anarchists, the record sleeve/poster details the atrocities of prisons in which "political criminals" are locked up for speaking out against the unjust, violent sectarian state which has long ignored outcries from its inhabitants. The sleeve / poster pictures those who died in peaceful demonstrations and hunger strikes, specifically, the "H Block" hunger strike. "Britains role in Northern Ireland, both on the streets and in legislative methods is clearly repressive and designed to keep in check a rebellious section of the population...which seeks to take control of and responsibility for its own future. As long as populations are unable to take a united stand against all forms of oppression, they will remain subservient to it

Greece: Massive demonstrations of the entire student community

Dozens of thousands of people took part in the education demonstrations that took place all around Greece. Tomorrow, student unions from the Polytechnic faculty will hold a rally outside the Working Unions' Association conference, demanding a call for a general strike. In Athens, an estimate of 20.000 people took part in today's education march. It has possibly been the biggest demonstration with people just from Athens.

In the march, apart from the massive student blocks, you could see a lot of workers and comrades from the movement of 90-91. A sprayed slogan written on the walls referred to the movement of 1979 which managed to revert the voted law 815.

The efforts for legal and medical support of the demonstrators was also interesting. Lawyers were scattered into all blocks, so as to prevent cops from malbehaving. Before the march, riot police forces and undercovered policemen temporarily detained some students who had been walking towards the march, without any reason or them carrying anything "suspicious". The cops were quite provocative towards the lawyers and the unionists who tried to prevent the detainments.
The struggle is carrying on during the assemblies of the following week. The battle is still against the Frame Law and the government.

In Koridalos Prison, Vassilis Stergiou is paying for his solidarity to the student movement, having been detained since the march of last Thursday 8th of March.

Greece: Ongoing repression against students, but the struggle continues!

Arrestee Solidarity actions are once again attacked by the police

Monday 12th of March: this is what democracy looks like The trial of the 49 arrestees facing minor charges has been postponed until next Wednesday, 21st of March in order for them to receive all legal documents and prepare their defence with their lawyers.

From the remaining nine arrestees, eight have been released on strict bail conditions (reporting to a police department three times a month and a 5,000 euros deposit!) while another one, V.S., a builder, has been detained.

Parents clashed with the police outside court building 7, were those with the minor charges are facing trial. The conflict broke out when some parents tried to enter the building and were pushed back by the cops. The conflict quickly spread and the cops began their assault. They pepper-sprayed some parents on the face; one parent fainted and another one was taken to hospital.

Photos posted on Indymedia show a cop hitting, by holding his baton the way round, which is strictly prohibited. Most mainstream media outlets across the country reposted this photo without giving indymedia any credit.

The student uprising is still fighting all around Greece. 62 arrestees and political orders for heavie penalties

52 arrestees that face minor offences have been released and will be on trial on Monday, by the police court. Another one that is to stand trial on Monday is still detained. 9 people with felony charges will be brought before the Interrogator and the Public Prosecutor on Monday, who will decide whether they will be detained till the trial.

The advocates are talking about a political trial, since the Public Prosecutor's attitude indicated that the juridical details are not of importance, as there are clear orders to proceed with the charges.
Protest and solidarity marches took place on Thursday night and Friday in a lot of cities: Athens, with 6-7.000 ppl participating Thessaloniki, Yannena, Patra, Syros. A march in Thessaloniki also on Saturday 10th.
Solidarity gatherings took place early in the morning in front of the police headquarters and the court. Athough the frame law for the functioning of the universities was voted on Thursday, nothing indicates that the students are to step backwards. So far, more than 290 Greek faculties are occupied, The recent repression in Athens was reflected to the coutryside as well, as there was heavy police repression in small towns, while half of the arrestees are originally students from regional universities. Therefore, all around Greece, subsequent solidarity activities are taking place. Local student assemblies are organised in order to support the arrestees with the essential documents, to organise everyday demonstrations and inform the local community of the brutality that the students have been facing.

Police squad was attacked in Athens centre

A riot police squad in Messologiou str. was attacked in the evening. They were beaten with metal sticks and they had their shields and helmets taken. Two cops were injured. No molotov cocktails were used. The entire area got full of undercovered policemen who were IDing people.

Announcement by the personnel of the Red Cross Hospital in Athens, Greece were the injured demonstrators appealed

Athens, 9th of March 2007

We denounce the unforeseen brutality and harshness of the police attacks against students, teachers, workers and youth during the protest march at 8th of March. The largest march of the last years, with more than 35,000 demonstrators participating, was ruined by the police and the government. The future scientists are shows as criminals, by the government and the media, in a country where it is known that the democratic rights were won by these very struggles of the students. This is how, those who force people to get on the streets, ask for abbetors within the common sense, in order to cover their crime.

While our Hospital was in duty, we were all witnesses of this tragic and bloody attack, as more than 30 injured people came along as urgent incidents, wounded on the neck and the head. The kind of the wounds and the severeness of the contusions they had had, proves that it has been a planned murdering attack against anyone who fights for their rights, for public and free education. People under medical treatment are still in Hospital, while seven wounded detainees were brought several hours later than they should have, in the early hours, and were moved back to the Police Headquarters in secrecy. We worry for the health state of these injured detainees. We worry for the suppression of every march. What will be the future of any reaction of ours for the lacks in the health system? should we expect a new walloping upon the uprising of the Hospitals?

We worry, we resist, we struggle. The struggle is not ending now. Against the violence of the power, we insist on pretend to our rights.

On the side of the student, the worker, every struggling person.

Αnnouncement of the TV Technicians' Union
We denounce the manoevres of the government to ask the footage of the riots, using the Public Prosecutor. The government and the Public Prosecutor should know that the visual material from the riots is a property of the TV stations and royalty of the cameramen. The cameramen work only for providing information to the Greek People, recording the actual events as observers, and not as “puppets” of the Police and the Government. We won't consent on any mechanism of control and power, as they try to control our effort and support its social and political insufficiency. We request from all the TV station Managers not to commit such an action.

Greece, 35.000 people were brutally attacked with rubber bullets and asphyxiating - tear gas.

Heavy repression in Greece, following the voting of the new legislation for the universities

The new frame law for the functioning of the Universities was voted on Thursday afternoon, after the decision of the government to start the process in the Parliament despite the public outrage; since students, pupils, teachers and academics have been in an ongoing struggle since May 2006, including occupations of schools and faculties, strikes and demonstrations.

As the state media reported, only the governmental party voted for the new law, while the rest of them decided to leave the room after the preliminary poll. Meanwhile, more than 35000 of students, including teachers and academics, were demonstrating in the streets of Athens, in order to surround the Parliament.
It was in front of the Parliament that some demonstrators clashed with the police while the air got full of asphyxiating and tear gas and rubber bullets were shot for the first time. The march was forced to split into pieces and about 100 hundred demonstrators that happened to be at that place, were segregated and severely walloped by a heavy police force. Several attacks followed, in order to split the rest of the march into smaller pieces, when the school teachers were beaten as well. Individuals had to ran away and hide into nearby buildings.

The situation is still evolving as this article is being written. Reports from the Athens police Heardquarters say that all of the 62 temporary detainees will be considered as arrestees. There is a widespread terror imposed on the arrestees, even 1st-year undergraduate girls have been accused for social disturbance. 45 people had to go to the hospital since they were injured. The police and the Public Prosecutor are very provocative, not allowing the arrestees to meet their lawyers. Also, 5 injured detainees, students in Chemical Engineering, are not allowed to go to the hospital.

Riots spread in Thessaloniki city as well, following a spontaneous solidarity march that took place, in protest for the repression that had taken place in Athens. Currently the riot police is spraying tear gas towards the university and the students in the Thessaloniki Polytechnic Faculty are suffering. The student radio 1431AM is reporting that the gas is everywhere in the corridors. Hundreds of students are trying to escape the gas, some of them into rooms or on the roof. 1 guy was injured after having been hit by a police tear gas rocket.

The student radio speakers say they are confident we are facing the first implications of the new legislation, that has led to a widespread feeling of dictatorship

Announcement from the occupation on the University Administration Building

We are witnessing historical moments!

The student movement once again proved, with its massive and militant presence in the streets of Athens, that it's alive and continues to build a huge barricade against the restructuring of education and labor.

Today, Thursday March the 3rd 2007, while the Parliament was voting the new law for the functioning of the universities, the movement proved that it won't fall back and will continue to demand the immediate withdrawal of the law!

The state gave an immediate answer: savage violence and a massive crackdown with wide use of tear gas and chemicals. The result was arrested and injured students by the tens. Our struggle won't stop here. Continuing in the direction of intensifying our struggle and against the crackdown we all witnessed today, all of us (university and highschool students, working people, unemployed and others) chose to occupy the Administration Building of the University in downtown Athens and convert it to a struggle and counter-information center.

We call upon the whole of society, the students, the working people, those working with time-limited contracts, the unemployed and all the struggling people to stand by our side and support our demands and to condemn the state's brutality that takes aim at everyone that reacts...each and every one of us!

We demand:
*The immediate release from custody of our fellow protestors and the drop of all charges against them! The immediate release of the German student Timo Behrendt who was arrested on February the 20th at Thessaloniki and is held at Komotini prison!
*The immediate withdrawal of the law for the universities!
*A general strike immediately!

We call:
*To a protest gathering at the Evelpidon courthouse on Friday March 9th 9:00 a.m.!
*To a protest gathering at the Administraion Building on Friday March 9th 18:00 p.m. followed by a march!

The government's terrorism won't stop us!

Police evicts social centre 'Ungdomshuset' in Copenhagen

After a long political and legal battle the basis-democratic, alternative political and cultural centre 'Ungdomshuset' was forcefully evicted by riot police and airborne anti-terror squads this morning. Ensuing demonstrations have seen large-scale confrontations between protestors and heavy-handed police, here is the full story from Copenhagen.
After serious social conflicts and uprisings by the autonomist and squatting movements in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the subsequent 'Ungdomshuset' was offered as part of a political compromise to the activists. The mainly young activists dubbed it ‘Ungdomshuset’ (‘The Youth House’), and started running various cultural and political activities out of there. It has for many years served as one of the only multicultural, basis-democratic collectives/community centres in Copenhagen, with the exception of the Freetown Christiania. Property rights remained in the hands of the local council, which in 1999 decided to disregard the previous political compromise and sell the house to the highest bidder.

In 2003 the fundamentalist Christian sect ‘Faderhuset’, which had bought the property in 2001 prompted the authorities to evict the ‘Ungdomshuset’ and its users. Despite many demonstrations in support of ‘Ungdomshuset’ Faderhuset won the ensuing courtcase and the politicians avoided serious involvement in the conflict, despite the political nature of the case. Many domestic demonstrations saw alleged police brutality and in December an ‘Ungdomshuset’ demonstration turned into a major confrontation between activists from all over Europe and the police. Subsequently the ‘Ungdomshuset’ was fortified in order to avoid an eviction and return the issue to the political arena.

This morning at 7:00 AM the anti-terror squad landed on the roof of the ‘Ungdomshuset’ via helicopters, while riot-police sealed off the street and attacked using teargas from below. As the whole area is closed off no documentation of the action and police-behaviour can take place. Some witnesses say that teargas and police violence was plentiful, although the eviction happened swiftly and according to police in a ‘relatively calm manner’.

Later in the day activists from all over Copenhagen rushed to protest the eviction of ‘Ungdomshuset’, they were met by aggressive policemen in riot gear blocking the street arresting suspected troublemakers with many resulting injuries. The demonstrators fought back and tried to reclaim the ‘Ungdomshuset’, but were repelled and activists took to the nearby streets and started building barricades, while engaging police in skirmishes.

The neighbourhoods has been entirely shut down by local residents and activists: actions and demonstrations have taken place all over Copenhagen with more planned for the following days and weeks. While sympathisers from all over Europe have been rushing in, although police are attempting to detain suspected activists at the borders. Furthermore solidarity demonstrations are under way in Germany, Norway and Sweden.

The house has functioned as a political and cultural centre, home to political demonstrations, political debates, concerts and many more cultural events since 1982. It has served as a basis-democratic remainder that ‘another world is possible’ until this morning… The actions of solidarity taking place all over Europe, as well as Russia and Australia are greatly appreciated. Please join in and support the struggle for autonomous commons and the resistance against the neoliberal repression.

Students demonstration brutally attacked by riot police (1/3/07)

Thousands of students and people at the streets to defend the state monopoly on the Universities in Athens.
* Attacks by members of the right wing party and neo fascists against the occupate university departments
* Gunfire from a special guard of greek police in air at the demonstration
* Arrests and tear gas

- GREEK DEMOCRACY SHOWS ITS REAL FACE -

see the video from the demonstration (the gunshot and the attack of riot police with tear gas outside the parliament here)

On March 1st, 2007 during a student demo in Athens, Greece against the government's education reform bill a policeman guarding the Ministry of the Aegean Sea started firing shots in the air against passing students. He later argued that he was in self-defense by attacking students with petrol bombs and because of that several students were arrested and beaten up by the riot police at the spot while they smoked the whole place in tear & asphyxiating gas. This video proves the lies of the police guard, the police and the goverment, while it shows that he was well inside and later moved behind the front door, which was locked that no one tried to force it open and begun firing shots while no attack with petrol bombs is taking place, just 2 students smashing some small window glasses at the other side of the building. It was only as a response to his shootings that the students then attacked the Ministry with paint and plastic bottles of water.
