Prisoners revolt around Greece

In the morning of Monday 23/4, prisoners at the prison of Malandrino in Fokida, mainland Greece, revolted. The spark igniting the revolt was the beating of anarchist prisoner Yiannis Dimitrakis as well as the vicious, violent response of the guards to the protests staged by his co-prisoners.

Disgraceful holding conditions, lack of water, regular beatings, electronic surveillance and the extremely short times allowed at the yard comprise a grim reality for the Malandrino prisoners. The prison has seen plenty of revolts in the past...

The latest information from Malandrino says that the prisoners are in full control of the prison.

Meantime, information coming in right now (12:30pm GMT, April 24) indicates that prisoners at the Ayios Stefanos prison of Patras have also revolted two hundred of them abstain from their daily meal. 340 prisoners at the prison of Tripoli have gone on hunger strike.

(this text distributed in Thessaloniki)
THE DICTATORSHIP OF DETENTION IS A REFLECTION OF DEMOCRACY

A revolt is taking place at two wings of the Malandrino Prison, following the beating of anarchist Yiannis Dimitrakis by prison guards earlier on the day.
Democracy beats up, tortures, murders and degrades the hostages in its inferno-like prisons.
Exterminating detention conditions lack of water regular beatings, surveillance cameras, architecture of violence, inhumanely short time allowed in the outside yards are all regular features of the Malandrino Prison, only temporarily broken thanks to the il-legal break offered by revolt.

Nothing has been offered to us by the humanitarian façade of democracy's executioners everything has been won by the screams of those in revolt, those standing on the rooftops of their prisons.

Smash Racism

West Athens,Greece - Past Sunday an Albanian immigrant was found dead at his cell in a police department while being kept under suspicion for some minor thefts. The police said that he committed suicide by hanging himself in the cell. His relatives gathered late that night outside the police station shouting and coursing the cops for his murder.

Being an immigrant and especially an Albanian in Greece means that you become target to a racism vastly spread among all the aspects of life and socializing, from your work where you are being fully exploited to your whole life in the Greek society. His story is just another part of the chain of exploitation and racism on immigrants,or it isn't?

Some 300 anarchists marched today(20/4/2007)and smashed the police department , while confronting with the riot police expressing their anger and their will to not accept for longer this barbarity which is an attack towards humanity and society. Marching with confidence, fully aware of their goals and well organized they managed to make the attack without having serious injuries or arrests.

The march began from a central square in that part of Athens (a really poor area of the working class) , passed through the neighborhood of his family, so as to express their solidarity and the went straight ahead to the police station followed by riot policemen. There they began throwing paints and stones (loads of them) at the police station and the police attacked back with gasses back didn't manage to break the bloc which was very united. The people marched back to the square shouting at top of their lungs that these crimes shall not remain unpunished. (athens indymedia)

Besides various concerts also with other bands like Liliput, Blue China, Vyllies and Propaganda, mittageisen became one of the most shaped Swiss-Wave bands. Mittageisen means iron-meal and based on a photographic layout made by John Heartfield in 1934. Heartfield was an early member of Club Dada, which started 1916 as Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich." from (mittageisen site)

Slow Motion

...and now something from my country which i really like a lot. Slow Motion. Unfortunately just because they are greeks the band weren't known outside greece. But in my opinion were much better than many electro wave bands of the 80's. For fans of synth wave, experimental ,electro punk bands."Slow Motion is a Greek band formed in 1985.Since then, one trait continues for them: The need for a background of spiritual architecture behind each song, visualising a conscious, theoretical method of communication. An energy of self - transcendence behind an important and weighty musical investment, which is abstracted like a ceremonial litany – an invocation of a self-destructive religion" slow motion official site. Here their first lp (this slow motion) + some extra tracks

Berlin Blondes

a late 70's minimal synth wave band from Glasgow, Scotland. "The first single was released early in 1980, so that was before the phrase 'New Romantic' had been coined. I guess they would have been called 'Futurists'. Something I've noticed from looking in old copies of Sounds mag from 1980 is they often used term "New Musik" for anything weird that used synths". from ( berlin blondes fan page). Many thanks to Karlos who reccomended this band in a previous post. Yes they were good :)

Religion is the opium of the people

"The foundation of irreligious criticism is: Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self
consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man – state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopaedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d’honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion.

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." - Karl Marx

The Ex

The Ex a band from the dutch squat scene. "After their start in 1979 The Ex developed over the years into a melting-pot of divergent musical styles: noise, rock, jazz, improvisation, and ethnic music have been interweaved under one unique umbrella: ‘Ex-music’. Discordant, highly rhythmic guitars and the rolling, almost African drumming style give the music of The Ex its special character. Now, is it punk, is it rock, is it jazz, is it dance... is it sloggabrogg? Or whatchamacallit? Maybe it’s some kind of experimental trance-dance avant-punky improv... Anyway, anyhow,The Ex is an autonomous band, living in the here and now." more info www.theex.nl
